The Metzgerturm (also Gabrielsturm ) in Lauterbourg in Alsace is a relic of a high medieval fortress . The building is protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ).

The butcher's tower in the west of the historic center was built in the middle of the 13th century, when the already under Emperor Otto III. fortified city was surrounded by a new fortress wall with 15 towers. When the fortress was demolished in 1706, the butcher's tower was preserved with a few other towers and served as a prison until 1761. He got his nickname Gabrielsturm from an escaped and condemned man named Gabriel .
