1926: Wilhelm Tell

The State Home Games of the Province of Westphalia Witten-Hohenstein were founded in 1926 by Konrad Maria Krug . The teacher, theologian and philosopher hoped that his foundation would inspire ordinary people without special schooling for the theater. That is why he primarily selected popular material to perform with dozens of extras .

history

1929: Wilhelm Tell
1928: Siegfried

They took place on the Hohenstein , the Witten city forest, which, thanks to these performances, became known as a local recreation area far beyond the borders of Witten. In a stream valley, the forest was cleared on one side and paths were provided for the extras to appear. A grandstand for 6,000 seats was created on the other side . Most of the buildings were bought from Haltern from the open-air theater there.

He opened the first season with Schiller's Wilhelm Tell . 1600 actors and extras were hired to do this.

The Landesheimatspiele were considered the most popular amateur games in Westphalia , up to the last season in 1931/1932, well over a million people attended the performances.

Since the natural stage was very dependent on the weather and therefore later had to deal with a decline in spectators, the open-air stage had to be abandoned. The last piece was performed at Hammerteich , the music for the Singspiel was composed by the Witten composer Robert Ruthenfranz (* 1905, † 1970). The year 1932 ended due to economic hardship (global economic crisis and rainy summers) the "natural theater" on the Hohenstein.
