The protected landscape area Bijambare is a 370 hectare landscape and nature reserve in the municipality of Ilijaš in the canton of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

Location description

The nature reserve is located in the north-eastern foothills of the municipality of Ilijaš, around 40 kilometers north of Sarajevo near Magistrale 18 from Sarajevo to Tuzla .

history

In 1967 researchers found stone tools in the karst caves in the nature reserve. It is therefore assumed that the area was already used by humans in prehistoric times. The protected area was designated in 2003.

description

The protected landscape area is 950  m near the Nišići plateau . It is home to numerous species of mushrooms and medicinal plants. There are numerous karst caves in the protected area, six of which have been explored so far. The largest and most famous of the caves is the Bijambare Cave , which is open to visitors . It is 420 meters long and is criss-crossed by four corridors up to thirty meters high and sixty meters wide. The largest corridor is also called the “concert hall” due to its size. The cave has numerous stalactites and stalagmites as well as tuff stones.
