The Langholter Meer and Rhauder Meer is a protected landscape area in the district of Leer in the northwest of the state of Lower Saxony . It bears the number LSG LER 00014. As the lower nature conservation authority, the district of Leer is responsible for the area.

Description of the area

The landscape protection area, designated on January 28, 2009, covers an area of ​​2.04 square kilometers and is located in parts of the municipalities of Rhauderfehn and Ostrhauderfehn .

In East Frisia, inland lakes are called seas . The Rhauder and Langholter Meer originally formed the mouth of the Burlage-Langholter Tief . They were separated from each other by the construction of the Hauptfehnkanal . The Rhaudermeer has since been completely cut off from the water supply and is now completely silted up . The Langholter Meer was dammed up to become a flood retention pole with winter flooding if necessary. Since then, the water has been drained via a bypass channel of the Burlage-Langholter Tief, west of the polder to the main Fehn Canal.

The area is characterized according to the district empty by "a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats, willow swamp bushes nutrient-dense and nutrient-poorer expression, abandoned grasslands with moderate nutrient-rich marshes, sedges - rushes - and high perennials rich wet meadows , other species-rich and species-poor grassland reinforced at the edges of the narrow valley as well as drained alder forest parcels and alder quarry forest in some excellent form ”.

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose is the "preservation and development of the special character, diversity and beauty of the Langholter Sea and the Rhauder Sea".
