description

The LSG covers large areas in the northern Märkischer Kreis, which are outside of the development area and other protected areas with stricter requirements. In the LSG there are mainly forest areas, grassland and fields. Smaller areas with Christmas trees , ornamental branches and tree nursery cultures are also located in the LSG. The forests mostly have spruce or beech trees.

Protection purpose

The designation was made to ensure and maintain the natural suitability for recreation and the efficiency of the natural balance against the diverse civilizational demands on nature and landscape in a forest and water-rich low mountain range. Because of a fundamental protection of the habitats of the animal and plant species characteristic of this landscape; the maintenance and development of valuable biotope structures; their importance for the ecosystem and species protection; the maintenance and development of the near-natural deciduous forest areas as well as the richly structured open land areas, especially in the peripheral areas. The LSG serves to secure the flowing waters and their floodplains because of their special importance for the efficiency of the natural balance and for the biotope network as well as a buffer function for the nature reserves located in the landscape protection area. To ensure the diversity, uniqueness and beauty of the landscape, which is mainly characterized by the open land areas used for agriculture in the otherwise largely wooded low mountain range as well as the heavily moved relief. Typical landscape elements such as bodies of water, wooded hilltops, woody structures, terrace edges and springs create a varied and richly structured landscape. The northern area of the landscape protection area is mainly characterized by the largely agriculturally used floodplain areas of the Ruhr.
