The landscape protection area Stiekelkamper Wald und Umgebung is a landscape protection area in the district of Leer in the northwest of the state of Lower Saxony . It bears the number LSG LER 00015. As the lower nature conservation authority, the district of Leer is responsible for the area.
Description of the area
The landscape protection area, designated on August 8, 1969, covers an area of 1.74 square kilometers in parts of the communities of Hesel and Holtland in the joint community of Hesel in East Friesland . The conservation area is about four kilometers north of Hesel near the Bagbander Aa.
It was first mentioned in 1522 as "den Stykelkamp", which probably means thistle field .
The former Stikelkamp estate with its 59 hectare forest is embedded in the nature reserve . It is characterized by beech and linden alleys. The estate also includes a park that was laid out around 1800 as a landscape garden within the inner canal . There is a tulip tree planted about 180 years ago as well as acacia , cypress , cedar , arborvitae , a red oak and the Japanese umbrella fir as rare tree species. The forest cemetery, which was laid out near the estate in 1828, is a resting place for the Lantzius-Beninga family, who managed the estate until the 20th century and made it the starting point for systematic forest culture in East Frisia in the 19th century.
Protection purpose
The main protection purpose is to protect the area from changes "that are likely to damage nature, impair the enjoyment of nature or deface the landscape."
