The Langavatn is a lake in Iceland . It is located in the west of the island in the area of Borgarfjörður in the municipality of Borgarbyggð .
Geography and history
The lake covers an area of 5.1 km² and is 36 m deep.
Similar to the larger lakes Þingvallavatn and Mývatn , it was created when a river was blocked by a lava flow. The lake is surrounded by mountains that are part of the active volcanic system of Ljósufjöll .
You can get to it via a relatively rough jeep runway. The area belongs to the highlands between Borgarfjörður and the Dalir region in southern Snæfellsnes . It is possible to fish trout in it. At the southern end of the lake there is a hut that is used by hikers, riders and the people who drive the sheep down from the highlands here in autumn.
The tributaries of the lake are called Langavatnsdalsá and Beilá , while the outflow is called Langá . Below the lake is a dam that was built for salmon farming in the river that is dammed here.
