The first documentary mention of a bridge at this point can be traced back to 1293. Initially it was a structure that spanned both frames. However, this was replaced early on by two separate bridges. Originally, the name only applied to the street, as far as the bridges and pillars reached. After 1817 the road led from the government road to the Great Arche, in 1870 the plan and the Stunzenplatz were added. At the corner of Regierungsstrasse and Lange Brücke there was a bridgehead church , the Vitikirche , which was demolished in 1809.

The central area of the Lange Brücke is now a pedestrian zone and a motor vehicle can only drive as far as the Fischersand, coming from the government road. The other side of the Long Bridge, coming from Paulstraße, is only open to motorized vehicle traffic as a one-way street as far as the junction into Stunzengasse. After 1990, numerous boutiques and shops in the upper price segment have settled in the street. Long before the First World War, there were trade goods here, such as colonial goods and furnishings.

The electric tram on the green Schützenhaus - Nordhäuser Strasse traveled over or through the Lange Brücke for 40 years. The section between Hirschgarten and Domplatz across the Lange Brücke and Kettenstrasse was opened in 1899. Since the road was particularly narrow and did not allow double-track expansion, the section was closed in 1939 and dismantled in the early 1950s. Instead, the trains ran on the eastern route via Domplatz - Anger - Hauptbahnhof - Kaffeetrichter.

Walk current bridge

Before it was demolished in 1908, the bridge over the Walkstrom coming from the Carthusian mill was a two-span natural stone arch bridge . Since then, the superstructure has consisted of a frame bridge, the superstructure of which was constructed with concrete girders.

Bergstrombrücke

The more northerly bridge over the Bergstrom coming from the Brühl district is a natural stone arch bridge from 1830. The 17.85 m long construction was built with Seeberg sandstone masonry . It consists of two circular arcs with clear widths of 7.1 m and 8.2 m with radii of 7.07 m and 7.77 m and a vault cut of 1.14 m and 1.18 m. The width of the arch is 7.55 m, the crown and fuselage are 38 cm thick. The central pillar is 52 cm wide.
