The long-billed parakeet ( Enicognathus leptorhynchus ) is a species of bird from the New World parrot tribe. The species occurs in South America.

Appearance

The long-billed parakeet reaches a body length of 40 centimeters. The strongly elongated upper beak is striking and eponymous.

The plumage is predominantly pale green. Each individual feather is lined with dark gray-brown. Similar to the Emerald Parakeet , the forehead and reins are brown-red, but in the Long-billed Parakeet this color stripe still surrounds the eye. In some individuals there is a brownish red belly spot. The coverts and the wings of the hand are tinted blue-green to blue. The under tail-coverts are green. The tail feathers are brown-red and slightly greenish at the end.

Spread and behavior

The long-billed parakeet has its main distribution center in Chile. The northern limit of distribution is Aconcagua and it occurs up to the island of Chiloé , occasionally also in the north of Aisén . The habitat of the long-billed parakeet is the cordilleras up to an altitude of 2,000 meters. Depending on the season, there are high-altitude hikes.

Long-nosed Parakeets find a large part of their food on the ground. They dig for the roots of grass with their long beaks. They are reminiscent of the Australian nasal cockatoos , to which they are not closely related. Long-billed parakeets also feed on grain and maize fields during the winter months, where they dig up freshly sown seeds. They are cave-breeders that nest in tree hollows and in crevices in the rock.
