The Austral Parakeet ( Enicognathus ferrugineus ) is a type of arini. It occurs in two subspecies only in South America.
Appearance
The Emerald Parakeet reaches a body length of up to 37 centimeters. The green plumage is characteristic of the Emerald Parakeet. Each individual feather has a dark border. The forehead and reins are reddish brown. The parting has a bluish tinge. The brownish red belly spot is striking. The coverts and the wings are blue-green. The beak is dark gray. The featherless eye ring is blackish. The iris is red-brown. The wax skin is feathered.
Spread and behavior
Of all South American parrots, the Emerald Parakeet has the most southern distribution area. It extends from the south of Argentina to Tierra del Fuego . In Chile, the Emerald Parakeet occurs in the Magellanes province. Among other things, it also settles on Isla Grande on the Beagle Channel . The Green Parakeet is also a migratory bird here.
