Lard is a hardcore punk / industrial rock band founded in 1989 by Jello Biafra ( vocals ), Al Jourgensen ( guitar ), Paul Barker ( electric bass ) and Jeff Ward ( drums ) . Biafra is better known as the lead singer of the Dead Kennedys . Jourgensen and Barker are founding members of the industrial metal band Ministry , which Ward was a part of. Over the years, several other Ministry members have played with Lard, Bill Rieflin , Mike Scaccia , and Rey Washam .

history

In 1988, Al Jourgensen was introduced to Jello Biafra at a Dead Kennedys concert in Chicago. Biafra gave Jourgensen his phone number, Jourgensen called him, and Biafra came to Chicago. He extended his stay there after starting to meet the studio receptionist. According to Jourgensen, Biafra behaved “totally diva-like ” during the first studio visit : he asked for tea, lemon and a certain brand of sweetener when Jourgensen wanted to record his singing, and, according to Jourgensen, sang himself in “operatic vocal exercises”. When he stepped in front of the microphone after two hours of warming up, the band didn't know what he was up to and expected “stark political lyrics”. Instead, Biafra started “screaming into the microphone like a madman. He had no text at all. ”Then Biafra asked for more tea and wanted to repeat the recording. Jourgensen refused as long as Biafra had no lyrics and just screamed, and locked him out of the studio. Biafra came anyway and shouted his ideas through the door. According to Jourgensen, the whole thing was "nevertheless [...] an interesting project". He and Paul Barker played more loosely than at Ministry, and "at some point Jello also loosened up" and "arrived with real lyrics", so Jourgensen let him back into the singing booth.

Lard has only played live a few times - once in Chicago after the recordings for The Last Temptation of Reid were finished . 2003 at the end of a Ministry concert and in San Francisco (September 26, 2004) and Seattle (Sept. 29, 2004) on Ministrys Evil Doer Tour.

Music style and lyrics

Like Ministry, Lard uses samples.

Like most of Biafra's works, Lard's songs are angry and political (the “ war on drugs ” is a particularly common theme) and distinctly satirical.
