The Largo Luís de Camões (Eng .: "Place Luís de Camões") is a square in the city center of the Portuguese seaside resort Figueira da Foz .
Its southern end is bounded by the Rua da República and, like it, is located in the area that was removed from the Mondego River in 1784 . To the north it merges seamlessly into Praça General Freira de Andrade .
On the eve of the day of remembrance for the national poet Luís de Camões , the square was renamed on June 9, 1880 and has been named since then. Before that, since 1792, it was called Praça do Comércio (German: “Place of Commerce”). In everyday life, however, it has been called Praça Velha (German: "Old Square") since the establishment of the Praça 8 de Maio and to differentiate it from it .
A monument designed by António Augusto Gonçalves for the fallen soldiers of the First World War has stood on the square since 1928 , which is called A Grande Guerra (English: “The Great War”) in Portugal , thanks to Portuguese neutrality during the Second World War . Before that, a memorial stone for those who fell in the Portuguese Colonial War was erected by a veterans' association in the late 1990s .
