Larry Langford
Larry Paul Langford (* 17th March 1948 in Birmingham , Alabama , † 8. January 2019 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and from November 2007 to October 2009 the 30th mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. In October 2009 he was found guilty of bribery by a federal court and later sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Langford graduated from the University of Alabama , Birmingham, with a degree in social and educational sciences. He then served in the United States Air Force . After returning to Birmingham, he became one of the first African-American television reporters there in the 1970s. He worked for the television broadcaster WBRC / Channel 6 (now Fox6) and received several awards for his work. In 1977 he was elected to Birmingham City Council. In 1988 he was elected mayor of Fairfield , a suburb of Birmingham. He held this office until 2000. During this time he particularly emphasized his Christian faith and doubted that the US Constitution required the separation of church and state.
Langford leaves behind a wife, a son and two grandchildren.
