Larry Rice

Larry Rice ( 1949 - March 13, 2006 ) was an American bluegrass musician.

Life

Larry Rice, who grew up in California , played with his younger brother Tony in his father Herb's bluegrass band, the Golden State Boys . Here he first met Chris Hillman , with whom he would later work several times.

In 1971 he was brought to Kentucky by JD Crowe , who was putting together a new band . As a 22-year-old mandolin player, he became a founding member of the successful JD Crowe & his New South Band. His brother Tony followed a year later. Larry stayed until 1974 when Ricky Skaggs replaced him.

In 1976 he joined the backing band of Dickey Betts , the former guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band . Over the years he has released a total of four solo albums. He also played several albums with his brothers Tony and Wyatt as The Rice Brothers and took part in two projects initiated by Chris Hillman.

Larry Rice, who was overshadowed by his famous brother Tony for his entire life, died of cancer on March 13, 2006.
