Herb Pedersen (born April 27, 1944 in Berkeley ) is an American country musician who has been a banjo player in the bluegrass scene since the early 1960s .

biography

Herb Pedersen already played as a teenager together with later stars like Jerry García or David Nelson . In 1963 he founded the Pine Valley Boys with friends Butch Waller and David Nelson . The group was completed by the fiddler Richard Greene and existed until 1966. They had numerous appearances, but no records were recorded.

In 1966 he joined the elderly bluegrass duo Vern & Ray , who had been looking for a banjo player for a long time. The collaboration was so satisfactory that they moved to Nashville in 1967 , the commercial center of country music . The hoped for successes did not materialize. Pedersen stepped in for a short time for the sick bluegrass veteran Earl Scruggs and then returned to Los Angeles . There he replaces Doug Dillard of the Dillards , who teamed up with ex- Byrd Gene Clark and founded the group Dillard & Clark Expedition .

In the next few years he worked exclusively as a studio musician. With his 5-string banjo he accompanied Emmylou Harris , Linda Ronstadt and Kris Kristofferson, among others . During this time he got to know the mandolin player Chris Hillman , with whom he would work again and again over several decades. His first solo album, Southwest , was released in 1976, followed by Sandman in 1977 . He then joined the backing band of John Denver .

In the 1980s he composed music for several television series. In 1984 his third solo LP Lonesome Feeling was released . A year later he formed the Desert Rose Band with Hillman . The group existed until 1993 and released several successful albums. He then founded the bluegrass formation Laurel Canyon Ramblers with Desert Rose bassist Bill Bryson . Three albums were recorded: 1995 "Rambler's Blues", 1996 "Blue Rambler 2" and 1998 "Back On The Street Again". This was followed by other projects with Chris Hillman, from which several LPs emerged, including Bakersfield Bound in 1996 , Out of the Woodwork in 1997 and Running Wild in 2001 .
