The larryleachia are a genus of the subfamily Asclepiadoideae that the family Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae) is allocated. The genus is named after Leslie "Larry" Charles Leach (1909-1996), a (Rhodesian) English electrical engineer and self-taught botanist who worked in Zimbabwe and South Africa . His specialty were the succulent Asclepiadaceae and Euphorbia.

features

The genus Larryleachia includes small stem succulent plants that branch out at the base with few to numerous, upright to prostrate, unreinforced and often woody shoots. The mostly gray-green, cylindrical or club-shaped, bare shoots are up to 15 cm, rarely up to 30 cm long and 2 to 6 cm in diameter. The flat, rounded and polygonal warts are arranged in 12 to 20 ribs. The thick, conical leaflets , which are less than 1 mm in size, appear in a dent near the tip of the wart and are persistent.

The inflorescences are clustered near the shoot tip and show individual or numerous single flowers that open in a row or rarely at the same time. The bare flower stalk becomes 0.5 to 3 mm long and 1 mm in diameter. The 5 sepals , sometimes ciliated and tapering to a point, stand on a widened base and slightly overlap. The flat bell-shaped or deeply incised corolla reaches a diameter of rarely 5, but mostly 7 to 16 mm. The flat, oval, triangular corolla lobes are pointed and strongly curved outwards. The outside is smooth and bare, the inside papillate or also bare. The bald secondary crown is formed in 2 rows. The interstaminal secondary crown is cupped at the base and its tips are truncated apically or divided more or less deeply. The staminal side crown, consisting of 5 lobes, is flattened dorsiventrally and lies on the back of the more or less square anthers. It is often connected on the back with an appendage to the interstaminal coronet. The stylus head is truncated and depressed and the pollinia are approximately horizontal. The pointedly tapered to spindle-shaped fruits are glabrous and smooth. They are 2 to 9 cm long and 0.5 to 1 cm thick and are spread as a pair of bellows at an angle of 30 to 180 °. The brown or gray seeds are circular or pear-shaped and reach a size of 3 to 7 mm. They are more or less concave, winged and brittle on the ventral side. On one side they are provided with a tuft of hair.

Occurrence

The occurrence of the genus extends from Namibia via Botswana to South Africa .

Systematics

The species of the genus correspond to the smooth shoots of the former genus Trichocaulon . List of species:

  • Larryleachia cactiformis (Hook.) Plowes : It occurs in two varieties in Capensis.
    • Larryleachia cactiformis var. Cactiformis : It occurs in the western and northwestern capensis.
    • Larryleachia cactiformis var. Felina (DTCole) Bruyn : It occurs in the northwest capensis.
  • Larryleachia marlothii (NEBr.) Plowes : It occurs in Namibia and in the Capensis.
  • Larryleachia perlata (Dinter) Plowes : It occurs in southwestern Namibia and in the Capensis.
  • Larryleachia picta (NEBr.) Plowes : It occurs in southern Namibia and in the Capensis.
  • Larryleachia sociarum (ACWhite & B.Sloane) Plowes (Syn .: Trichocaulon sociarum A.C. White & B.Sloane ): It occurs in Namibia.
  • Larryleachia tirasmontana (Plowes) Plowes : It occurs in northwestern and south-central Namibia.

No longer in this genus, but in Stapelia :

  • Stapelia clavata Willd. (1798) Trichocaulon clavatum (Willd.) H. Huber (1961)
