Lars Brink

Lars Elof Gustaf Brink (born November 12, 1943 ) is a Swedish theoretical physicist.

Brink was a member of the theory group at CERN from 1971 to 1973 . In 1976/77 he was with John Schwarz at Caltech . Since 1986 he has been professor for theoretical elementary particle physics at the Chalmers Institute of Technology in Gothenburg . From 1987 to 1993 he was deputy dean of the physics faculty. He has been a visiting scientist at CERN, Caltech and ITP (Institute for Theoretical Physics) in Santa Barbara on several occasions .

Brink is one of the pioneers of (super) string theory since the 1970s (at CERN and Caltech). He has been coordinating the EU network superstring theory since 2000 .

With Paolo Di Vecchia and Howe, he developed a Lagrangian for fermionic strings in 1976 and a formalism to formulate the string effect reparametrization invariant in analogy to two-dimensional general relativity theory (later known as the Polyakov effect and specified independently by Stanley Deser and Bruno Zumino ).

With Holger Bech Nielsen he gave an interpretation of the critical dimension of the bosonic string of 26 via an expression for the mass of the ground state via zero point fluctuations.

In 1977 he constructed the first super-symmetric Yang-Mills theories with John Schwarz and Joël Scherk .

From 1990 to 1993 he was head of the Nordita Council in Copenhagen and from 1993 to 1997 in their council. Since 1993 he has been on the Council of the International Center for Fundamental Physics in Moscow .

In 1997 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . Since 2001 he has been a member of the Nobel Committee for Physics.
