Lazar Markovich Chidekel ( Russian Лазарь Маркович Хидекель ; born November 10, jul. / 23. November  1904 greg. In Vitebsk , Russian Empire ; † 22. November 1986 in Leningrad ) was a Soviet painter and architect, who as Expressionist began in his main work, however, is assigned to Suprematism . Later he turned to socialist classicism.

life and work

Lasar Chidekel studied from 1919 to 1922 at the Vitebsk Art School (WChPI), first with Marc Chagall , later with Kasimir Malewitsch and El Lissitzky . He was a founding member of the artist group UNOWIS . With Ilja Tschaschnik he published the magazine AERO , of which only one issue appeared.

In 1920 Chidekel formulated the idea of ​​a “green city”. As a result, Chidekel developed into a respected representative of Suprematism, especially in the field of architecture. From 1922 to 1929 studied at the Petrograd Institute for Civil Engineers (PIGI). During this time he also worked for Malevich at the Museum of Artistic Culture .

From 1925 he worked in Alexander Nikolski's architecture office .

As socialist realism became mandatory doctrine, it turned more towards classical forms.

From 1935 to 1985 he was professor of architecture at the engineering school in Leningrad , where he died a year after his retirement .

His estate is held in the Khidekel Family Archive in New York City.
