The Laser II (also Laser 2 ) is a robust two-man trapeze dinghy with spinnaker , which can be sailed very well and quickly with both 120 kg and 160 kg crew weight.
In 1978 Frank Bethwaite drew the Laser II as a continuation of the standard laser . At that time he recognized the following: "The racing machines are far too complicated for the recreational sailor and not robust enough for the young learners". In May 1979 the new boat class was presented at the Melbourne Sailboat Show, followed by a presentation in Europe at the London Boat Show in January 1980.
In England and North America, the "flying refrigerator door" was a resounding success. Many English universities and clubs gratefully accepted the boat. The recognition of the IYRU (today's International Sailing Federation - ISAF ) as a unit class soon followed. In 1986 the first European championship and in 1989 the first world championship could be sailed. In continental Europe things were a little different. Here the Laser II had to fight against conservative clubs and associations. Even so, he was an ISAF youth boat from 1989 to 1996.
At the end of 2004 there were around 10,500 boats worldwide.
