The Lasker defense is an opening in the game of chess , which is part of the Queen's Gambit and therefore belongs to the closed games .
It develops from the Rejected Queen's Gambit .
It is named after the German master player and world chess champion Emanuel Lasker .
The Lasker Defense begins with the moves
1. d2 – d4 d7 – d5 2. c2 – c4 e7 – e6 3. Nb1 – c3 Ng8 – f6 4. Bc1 – g5 Bf8 – e7 5. e2 – e3 0–0 6. Ng1 – f3 h7 – h6 7. Bg5-h4 Nf6-e4 .
It is similar to Capablanca's exoneration maneuver in the Orthodox Defense of the Queen's Gambit Rejected. Occasionally the same positions arise here as after Capablanca's relief maneuver. In such a case the only difference is that here the black h-pawn is on h6 instead of h7. Then after Bd3 with Qc2 White cannot gain any tempo by attacking h7.
After 8. Bh4xe7 Qd8xe7 9. c4xd5
(9. Qd1 – c2 c7 – c6 10. Bf1 – d3 Ne4xc3 11. Qc2xc3 d5xc4 12. Bd3xc4; 9. Ta1 – c1 c7 – c6 10. Bf1 – d3 Ne4xc3 11. Rc1xc3 d5xc4 12. Bd3xc4 Nb8 – d7 13. 0 –0 e6 – e5 results in the same position as in Capablanca's relief maneuver after 12.… e6 – e5)
Ne4xc3 10. b2xc3 e6xd5 is 11. Qd1 – b3 Rf8 – d8 12. c3 – c4 d5xc4 13. Bd3xc4 Nb8 – c6 the main continuation.
First of all, 6.… Nf6 – e4 was played directly. The 66-year-old Lasker tried the move 7.… Nf6 – e4 in the 1935 Moscow tournament and was able to score a draw against Gideon Ståhlberg and Grigori Löwenfisch . In modern competitive chess the defense was often used by Artur Yusupov .
