Lassell is a small impact crater in the eastern part of the Mare Nubium . It is located west of Alpetragius crater and southwest of Alphonsus large crater .

The crater was flooded by lava , which left a nearly flat surface. From this the low original crater rim protrudes. This edge is generally circular, but has a more polygonal appearance. The crater floor has a low albedo , which makes the crater interior appear dark.

East-northeast of Lassell is a circular, bowl-shaped crater called 'Lassell B'. This has a higher albedo than its surroundings and therefore appears relatively bright, especially when the sun is high.

The small crater 'Lassell D' lies in a west-northwest direction halfway to the ruins of the Guericke crater . This mini-crater is surrounded by a high albedo area and provides an example of a noticeable bright spot on the Earth's moon .
