Some people help him, others don't. He can survive until the end of the war, but loses his right arm. As an adult he emigrates to Israel, where he meets one of his sisters again and marries a beautiful woman.

Press reviews

“A poignant youth novel. ... There are already many books at the time of National Socialism, but the grand master of Israeli youth literature has succeeded in creating a special book with this novel. It almost seems as if it sprang from the author's imagination, because the blows of fate that little Srulik has to endure are unbelievable. Uri Orlev tells this exciting story with a lot of feeling and the power of observation like an adventure novel with a light hand from a child's perspective in the tried and tested translation by Mirjam Pressler. He has thus succeeded in writing a wonderful novel that gives courage and will not only inspire young readers. "

- The daily mirror

“Orlev tells this authentic story poignantly, but without pessimism. Jurek holds his own like an adult. And yet his old age protects him because he overcomes many dangers with a childlike thirst for adventure. This will surely move young readers more than historical figures and pathos. Orlev renounces both. Anyone who reads the book - young and old - feels very closely, worries about Jurek, admires Jurek, mourns and cries with Jurek. "

“Srulik's survival is the result of a chain of surprises, and it is these that make this book so worth reading. Because the expected rarely happens, and knowledge of human beings grows from many errors. For young readers, the book should also have the character of an adventure novel, because it is definitely adventurous how the gangs of boys in the Polish forests feed on berries and snails, how they steal laundry from the linen and potatoes from the fields. But of course the book is more than that: It is an ode to life and humanity. "
