Laura Solera Mantegazza

Laura Solera Mantegazza (born January 15, 1813 in Milan , † September 15, 1873 in Cannero Riviera , Lake Maggiore ) was an Italian philanthropist and social reformer .

Life

Mantegazza came from the upper class ; her father was the Swiss Cristoforo Solera, her mother the Italian Giuseppina Landriani. Above all, they took care of the best possible upbringing of their daughter and, according to contemporary witnesses, she was also considered Milan's smartest girl.

In 1830 she married Giovan Battista Mantegazza in her hometown. The later doctor Paolo Mantegazza was her son.

Politically interested, she soon made the acquaintance of Teresa Casati (1787–1830) and Adelaide Cairoli (1806–1871) and worked with them. In 1850 Mantegazza u. a. the first day nursery for children from the poor population. She founded the Scuola professionale femminile d'Italia , a kind of vocational school for women, in 1870 and thus became a pioneer in women's education .

Laura Solera Manteggazza died at the age of 60 on September 15, 1873 in Cannero Rivera, where she also found her final resting place.
