Laurence Adolphus Bisson

Laurence Adolphus Bisson (* 1897 in Jersey , † 1965 in Belfast ) was a British Romance studies and literary scholar.

life and work

Bisson went to school in Saint Helier , Jersey, and studied at Pembroke College (Oxford) , as well as (after military service with loss of a leg) in Paris and Bordeaux (graduated in 1921). From 1921 to 1925 he taught in Canada, first at Queen's University (Kingston) , from 1922 at Trinity College, University of Toronto (as an associate professor). He received his doctorate in 1932 under Paul Laumonier in Bordeaux on Le romantisme littéraire au Canada français (Paris 1932). Then he became a lecturer in Birmingham, from 1933 a lecturer, later a reader, at Oxford. From 1945 he was professor of French at Queen's University Belfast .
