Laurence Peck
Laurence Ernest Rowland Picken (born July 16, 1909 in Nottingham , † March 16, 2007 in Cambridge ) was an ethnomusicologist , zoologist and biochemist .
Live and act
Laurence Picken received a scholarship to study at Trinity College , Cambridge. He submitted his doctoral thesis in the field of zoology in 1935. In 1944 he became a fellow at Jesus College . Between 1946 and 1966 he was employed as assistant to the head of the research department in zoology at the university. In 1944 Picken also began his research in the field of traditional Chinese music and from 1951 he traveled regularly to Turkey. His large number of publications illustrate his diverse ethnomusicological interests. In 1975 he published Folk Musical Instruments of Turkey, an important work on Turkish music . In 1973 he was elected a member of the British Academy .
Two commemorative publications on his 60th and 70th birthday illustrate his high position among researchers. Picken's Library and Archives are located in the Cambridge University Library .
