The Catholic Laurentius Chapel is a church building in Küstelberg , a district of Medebach in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia . Its origins go back to the Middle Ages. The chapel in its current form was built in 1885.

History and Development

Originally a chapel belonged to the Augustinian convent Küstelberg, which was built in 1152, where a priest celebrated mass well into the 14th century even after the nuns had moved to Glindfeld . For a while the place was desolate, but has been repopulated again in modern times. In the middle of the 18th century, a Marienkirche destroyed in the Thirty Years War was replaced by a new chapel. The pastor of Winterberg consecrated the newly built altar there in 1736. Until 1885 this was the church in Küstelberg. It finally gave way to the Laurentius Chapel.

The old chapel had a single nave with a 3/8 end. A bell tower was located above the western hip roof. It was demolished in 1885 and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. There is a cemetery around the building. The hexagonal, light-colored extension with a large church window was built in 1973. Stones from the old monastery were built into the annex.
