Laurenz Heinrich Carl Melchers , also LH Carl Melchers (born May 8, 1812 in Bremen , † November 28, 1888 in Wiesbaden ) was a German entrepreneur and head of the Melchers company in Bremen.

Melchers was the eldest son of the businessman and company founder Anton Friedrich Carl Melchers . Its shipping company Focke & Melchers and, since 1814, Melchers & Co. operated over 30 ships between the ports of Europe, America and the Pacific waters and was then also active in the wool and tobacco trade.

After completing his training, Melchers stayed in the USA and Cuba . In 1837 he became a partner in the company C. Melchers & Co. founded by his father in 1806. After his father's death, he took over the management of the company in 1854. Since the 1860s, the company established itself in Asia, traded in China and founded a branch in Hong Kong in 1866 . The trade was now concentrated on China and the company therefore separated from the shipping business. The company has had extraordinary success since then. Over 2000 people were employed in twelve branches in China.

Melchers lived in Contrecarpe No. 112 since 1867.
The Chinese trade is still a focus of the still existing company.

Honors

  • The Melchersbrücke in the Bürgerpark in Bremen, which he donated in 1881/82, bears his name.
  • The Melcher Street in Bremen- Schwachhausen was named after the family.
