history
1806 to 1866
Carl Melchers (1781–1854) founded the Focke & Melchers company in 1806 with Carl Focke as a sailing ship - shipping company and trading company. The focus was on emigrants to the USA and the transport of goods from Cuba , Mexico and the USA. The shipping company operated over 30 ships between the ports of Europe, America and the Pacific waters and was then also active in the whale oil, wool and tobacco trade. Between 1846 and 1853 the three Melchers brothers Heinrich (1822-1893), Georg (1827-1907) and Gustav (1830-1902) founded a branch in Mazatlán , Mexico. Another branch followed seven years later in Honolulu , Hawaii (the Melchers Building is now the oldest surviving commercial building in Honolulu). After the company's founder died in 1854, his eldest son Laurenz Heinrich Carl Melchers took over the management of C. Melchers & Co.
1866 to 1945
Since the 1860s, the company established itself in Asia, traded in China and founded a branch in Hong Kong in 1866 . The trade was now concentrated on China and the company therefore separated from the shipping business. The company had extraordinary success in Asia and opened a further eleven branches in China during this period, employing over 2000 people. Since its establishment in 1857 , Melchers has been involved in Norddeutscher Lloyd , and in 1887 took over the representation of the shipping company in China and Hong Kong.
The company suffered setbacks as a result of the First World War . All Melchers property in China and Hong Kong was confiscated. After the war, the company recovered and the Asian business was rebuilt. With the death of Hermann Melchers in 1918, the family management of the company ended. Until the Second World War , the company was active in both the Chinese trade and the production of goods such as beverages. Lanterns , clocks , cameras , tools and hardware were exported to China . Egg products, hides and skins , seeds , animal hair and wood oil were mainly imported to Europe . In addition, Melchers operated port facilities and maintained shipping agencies.
Since 1945
The Second World War led to an almost complete standstill of business. This was followed by expropriations by the Kuomintang and then by the Chinese communists. In the early 1950s, Melchers rebuilt the Far East trade. The first branches in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur were reopened and the branch network was gradually expanded to all of Asia.
1960 Melchers became the sole importer of Sony entertainment electronics, further agencies ( Pioneer , Citizen) followed. A joint subsidiary with Ferrostaal AG was founded in Essen in 1968 to export machinery to the communist countries of Asia, especially China . This combined the knowledge of Ferrostaal AG in the plant business with the knowledge and experience of Melchers in the complex China business. From the 1970s, sales offices were set up in many Asian countries - Korea , Taiwan , Thailand , Philippines , Indonesia , Singapore , Malaysia , Sri Lanka . After China reopened at the end of the 1970s, branches were set up there again.
In the 1980s, the San Francisco branch and with it trade between the USA and Asia was established. In 1990 Melchers was one of the first German companies to open branches in the Vietnamese cities of Hanoi and Saigon . In 1994 a branch was opened in Yangon , Myanmar.
From 2000 onwards, Melchers developed from a trading company to an international service provider for market expansion and trading - organized according to a holding concept. Further expansions took place through acquisitions of brands, know-how and market presence in Europe and Asia. Increased M&A activity accelerated continuous growth. In South Africa , Melchers founded a joint venture with Stucken & Co. in Port Elizabeth . The office network in Asia was also expanded in the second-tier cities of Dalian , Urumqi , Changchun , Chongqing , Harbin , Bogor , Penang , Johor Bahru and Taichung . R. T. Rubber Foam Indonesia started operations in 2006 - with the production of natural latex pillows and mattresses. In 2011 Melchers opened a representative office in Phnom Penh , Cambodia. The representative offices based in China were converted into corporations in 2012 - to expand market development services.
