Laurie Spiegel (born September 20, 1945 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American composer .

Life

Spiegel played guitar, banjo and mandolin in her youth. After studying social sciences, she studied classical guitar and composition privately in London. She then took lessons in Renaissance and Baroque lute at the Juilliard School of Music and took composition lessons from Jacob Druckman and Vincent Persichetti .

In the 1970s, Spiegel was one of the pioneers of computer music in New York and used algorithms for her compositions. She developed the Music Mouse composition software . Works from this period appeared on the album The Expanding Universe on the Philo label . Spiegel's adaptation of Johannes Kepler's "Harmonices Mundi" ( Music of the Spheres ) is the first track in the "Sound of Earth" section of the Voyager Golden Records , which are on board the space probes launched in 1977 as part of the Voyager program . She later moved away from the New York avant-garde scene. Despite complex compositional structures and the use of modern electronic technology, musical expression is in the foreground in her compositions.

Her composition "Sediment" from 1972 was selected for the soundtrack of the film The Hunger Games - The Hunger Games (2012).

In 2013 she received the SEAMUS Award .
