Laurynas Mindaugas Stankevičius (born August 10, 1935 in Trakai ; † March 17, 2017 ) was a Lithuanian social democratic politician , prime minister , member of the Lithuanian Democratic Labor Party (LDDP).

Studies and time of the Lithuanian SSR

After attending the Antanas Vienuolis School in Vilnius , he studied at the Institute of Finance in Leningrad from 1953 to 1957 . He then became an employee of the Ministry of Finance, where he was responsible for the economy , the state budget and agriculture in the following years . In 1969 he became a representative of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR at the Council of Ministers of the USSR . In 1977 he was appointed chairman of the Labor Committee. After all, from 1988 to 1990 he was Deputy Minister for Labor and Social Affairs of the Lithuanian SSR. During this time he belonged to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union ( CPSU ).

Promotion to Prime Minister 1996

After the declaration of independence on March 11, 1990, he became Deputy Minister of Social Affairs, before taking over the leadership of this ministry in the cabinet of Adolfas Šleževičius on October 20, 1993 . On July 1, 1994, he became Minister for State Reform and Local Affairs in the government. In 1989 he joined the Lithuanian Communist Party (LKP) under the chairmanship of Algirdas Brazauskas and then the LDDP.

On February 15, 1996, he succeeded Šleževičius himself as Prime Minister for the remaining time until the parliamentary elections in October 1996. The government he led was in office until November 27, 1996 and after the clear defeat of the LDDP was taken over by the cabinet Gediminas Vagnorius replaced. From March 25, 1998 to May 4, 1999, he briefly served as Minister of Health in his cabinet . He was also a simple member of parliament from November 1996 to March 1998 .
