Adolfas Šleževičius

Adolfas Šleževičius (born February 2, 1948 in Mirčiškė, Rajongemeinde Šiauliai ) is a Lithuanian businessman, former politician , Prime Minister of the Lithuanian Democratic Labor Party (LDDP).

Studies and professional career

After attending school, he completed a degree in mechanics and engineering at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute from 1967 to 1971 . He then worked as an engineer in mechanical engineering - Combine operate from Kaunas. From 1971 to 1972 he taught at the technical center for the food industry in Kaunas. After receiving his doctorate , he was Deputy Minister for Meat and Dairy Industry in the Ministry of Soviet Lithuania from 1977 to 1981 . From 1983 to 1989 he was director of an agricultural combine. Subsequently, he was Lithuania's first deputy minister of agriculture before becoming president of the Lithuanian- Norwegian joint venture C.-Olsen-Baltic on March 11, 1990 after Lithuania gained independence . After independence, he stepped from the Lithuanian Communist Party (Lietuvos komunistų partija, LKP) to the newly founded Lithuanian Democratic Workers Party .

Prime Minister from 1993 to 1996 and vote of no confidence

On March 10, 1993, he was elected Prime Minister to succeed Bronislovas Lubys . During his reign he continued the reform course that had begun after independence with greater social consideration and endeavored to establish good relations with both the West and Russia. In addition, his government introduced a monetary authority to provide financial support for economic reforms.

He held the post of Prime Minister until he was replaced by Laurynas Mindaugas Stankevičius on February 15, 1996, after he was declared suspicious of Parliament ( Seimas ) on February 8, 1996 with just 24 votes to 96 .

Afterwards he worked again as a businessman. Later, following a request from two members of the Seimas, a preliminary investigation into the abuse of office due to financial uncertainties in a banking scandal broke out. Because of the length of the preliminary investigation, which resulted in no charge, Šleževičius filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg . The latter saw a violation of the right to a quick hearing regulated in Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights and on October 23, 2001 awarded him 100,000 litas in damages and costs .

Šleževičius is married twice. His first wife from 1970 to April 1999 was Birutė Šleževičienė († autumn 1999), with whom he lived in Žvėrynas . After the adultery, his wife Birutė suffered from depression and was later found dead in her home. The younger daughter Aistė Šleževičiūtė (* 1984) is a lawyer , competition lawyer , a graduate of the University of Bristol , the University of Leiden and King's College London , doctoral candidate at the University of Edinburgh , and works as Legal Counsel at Law Firm RB. The older daughter Kristina Šleževičiūtė (* 1971) lives with her family.

The second wife since 2000 is Janina Šleževičienė (formerly Račkienė), former head of the canteen of the Government Chancellery of the Republic of Lithuania and the wife of an official in the Lithuanian government, whom Šleževičius met while serving in the Lithuanian government and with whom he later lived in Valakampiai .
