The Lautaro Island ( Spanish Isla Lautaro , in Argentina Isla Crámer ) is a 1.5 km long island in front of the Danco Coast of Graham Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located on Gerlache Strait immediately west of Lemaire Island .
The first sighting probably goes back to participants in the Belgica expedition (1897-1899) under the direction of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery . Participants of the 3rd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1948–1949) named her after the Lautaro , one of three ships on this expedition. The namesake of the Argentine name is the French-born hydrographer and cattle breeder Ambrosio Crámer (1792–1839), who died in the rebellion against the Argentine dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas .
