particularities Artificially created for the water supply, part of the city garden

The Lauterberg is an artificially raised hill in the city garden of Karlsruhe , laid out from 1889 to 1893. Originally the hill was built for water supply, inside there is a former elevated water tank. The material for the embankment came from the excavation of two lakes in the surrounding area.

The Lauterberg towers over the Karlsruhe core city by about 40 meters. At its summit there is a viewing platform that can be reached via a bird protection trail. Until 1958 there was an artificial castle ruin with a lookout tower at the site of today's platform, built from the remains of stone from the Rastatt fortress .

During the Second World War, there was an anti-aircraft gun on the Lauterberg .

Elevated water tank

The 3200 cubic meter tank made of riveted wrought iron plates was operated by the municipal waterworks from 1893 to 1967. The height of the hill was determined before construction began so that there was sufficient water pressure to supply the tallest building in the city at the time, the castle tower . After its shutdown, the container was filled with concrete to prevent the structure from rusting through.

Naming

Bust of the namesake Wilhelm Florentin Lauter at the foot of the mountain

The Lauterberg is named after Wilhelm Florentin Lauter , Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe from 1870 to 1892. Construction began during Lauter's tenure, but he never saw the completion of the construction project.
