Gunnar B. Stickler

Gunnar B. Stickler (* 13. June 1925 in Peterskirchen , † 4. November 2010 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was a German - American pediatrician . The Stickler syndrome was named after him.

Life

Gunnar Stickler attended the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich until 1943 . He studied medicine at the universities of Vienna , Erlangen and Munich and received his doctorate in 1948 with the thesis The effects of light, especially of ultraviolet light on the vegetative system. In 1951 he emigrated to the United States, where he worked as a pediatrician at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, New Jersey , and then at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota . In 1965 he published the work on hereditary progressive arthro-ophthalmopathy, now known as Stickler syndrome . In 1973 he became director of the Mayo Children's Clinic. During his life, he wrote over 200 articles in medical journals. Stickler was married and had two children. He retired in 1989 and died in 2010.
