The Laverda 1000 is a motorcycle from the former Italian manufacturer Laverda , which was the largest sports motorcycle in Italy when it was launched in 1973 .

prehistory

Francesco Laverda, the grandson of the agricultural machinery manufacturer Pietro Laverda, founded in 1949 in Breganze the Moto Laverda SpA and started 1950 with the motorcycle Laverda 75 production. Massimo Laverda, son of Francesco, brought out the Laverda 650 in 1968 , the displacement of which was increased to 750 cm³ a little later. They were two-cylinder machines, the specialty of which was the frame that was open at the bottom and the supporting engine.

technology

In 1969, the development of a machine with a three-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts ( DOHC ) and bucket tappets and a displacement of 1000 cm³ was already complete. The first prototypes were created by adding another cylinder to the two-cylinder engine. In contrast to that of the 750 series, the frame was a double-loop frame closed at the bottom . In 1972 the three-cylinder engine went into series production in the Model 1000. The unusual engine design with 180 ° crank pin offset of the middle piston, the outer pistons ran parallel with 360 ° ignition interval, led to a distinctive engine noise.

Model development

1973: The first fifty machines had spoked wheels and drum brakes, a three-in-one exhaust system and the tank was made of plastic. The price was 9,600 DM . In the later series machine, the tank was made of sheet metal and the exhaust system was a three-in-two design.
1974: The Laverda 1000 3C comes onto the market. Power according to DIN lt vehicle registration: 78 hp (57 kW) at 7.750 min. -1 ; Specified in the manual: 80 HP (59 kW) at 7,250 min -1 . The machine now had double disc brakes (Ø 280 mm) at the front and a drum brake (Ø 230 mm) at the rear. A test carried out by Das Motorrad magazine in April 1975 (Issue 8/75) showed a speed of 209.4 km / h (long lying solo) and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.7 s.
1976: The 1000 3CL , now with cast aluminum wheels, a rear brake disc (Ø 280 mm) and a rear bumper, is offered.
1977: The enlarged 1200 T comes onto the market; The difference to the 1000 series was, apart from the larger cylinder bore, the more inclined rear suspension struts.
1980: The Jota (1000 cm³) and 1200 TS models are offered in Germany. They are equipped a little differently (for example cladding, fittings, side panels) and have a slightly higher performance.
1982: The 120 ° - 1000 RGS models offered, the crank pin offset was now 120 °, had a modified double tube frame with elastically suspended motors. The 1000 SFC was a slightly modified "RGS" that was built until 1987.

The End

In February 1987 Laverda filed for bankruptcy because of the poor market economy. On March 31, 1987 the company was sold and the production of motorcycles ceased.
