Lavinia Dock
Lavinia Lloyd Dock (born February 26, 1858 in Harrisburg , † April 17, 1956 in Chambersburg ) was an American nursing scientist, nursing historian and secretary of the " International Council of Nurses (ICN)".
Lavinia Lloyd Dock grew up with five siblings. She trained as a nurse at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and received her diploma in 1886. In 1889 she became a teacher at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Nursing School in Baltimore and represented the school administration Isabel Hampton Robb . The Johns Hopkins Hospital was under the direction of the Canadian clinician Sir William Osler from 1889 , who also dealt with questions of medical education and worked as a medical historian. In 1890 Lavinia Dock finished her first academic work with the title "Textbook of materia medica for nurses". This was followed by a job in the education and training of community nurses in New York City. Lavinia Lloyd Dock founded the “American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses” in order to improve nursing education in the country based on William Osler's commitment to medical education. In 1899 Lavinia Dock was recognized as a leader in US nursing science when she was elected Secretary of the International Council of Nurses. Between 1907 and 1912 Dock wrote the four-volume classic "History of Nursing" together with Mary Adelaide Nutting . Dock died very old in 1956 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
