Lawrence is an impact crater in the area between the Mare Tranquillitatis in the west and northwest of the Mare Fecunditatis . The Taruntius crater lies in a south-easterly direction. The Rima Cauchy crosses the eastern part of the Mare Tranquillitatis and extends to the northern edge of Lawrence.
Lawrence was inundated by lava , so that only a low ring of the original crater rim protrudes above the surface. This edge has breakthroughs in the north and southwest, while the eastern part has largely been preserved.
The crater is named after the physicist O. Lawrence Ernest and astronaut Robert Henry Lawrence, Jr. named. Before it was given its current name in 1973 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), Lawrence was known as 'Taruntius M'.
