Le Babouin et la Babouine
Le Babouin et la Babouine (or Jean Babouin et Jeanne Babouine ) are two sculptured menhirs in the forest of Lanvaux, about 500 m southeast of the hamlet of Le Lerman southeast of Trédion in the Morbihan department in Brittany in France . The menhirs date from the Neolithic and were sculpted later, possibly in Gallic times or after, and are therefore not statue menhirs in the classical sense.
description
The menhir Babouin ( German baboon ) is about 1.45 m high. Its upper part bears a face 65 cm in diameter surrounded by a circle facing south. The size and shape of the menhir was changed to bring up the face; it is likely that the engraving was made after its installation. Babouin could originally have symbolized a phallus. He is about 20.0 m east of his companion.
The menhir Babouine ( German baboon ) is about 3.25 m high and slightly inclined. Its upper part has a weathered face, breasts and a necklace. The stone was cut into a strange three-tiered cylinder shape and straightened sometime after 1862. He could symbolize a fertility goddess.
The menhirs were classified as a monument historique in 1933 .
