Jacques Briard (born November 7, 1933 in Saint-Malo ; died June 14, 2002 in Chantepie ) was a French prehistorian and research director at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS).

Life

Education

Jacques Briard, son of a teacher, began studying natural sciences at Rennes University in 1950 . Here he met Jean L'Helgouach (1933–2000) and Yves Coppens , with whom he studied with the scientifically oriented prehistorian and archaeologist Pierre-Roland Giot (1919–2002). From 1953 he was first a teacher in Fougères , then in Rennes . In 1954 he graduated with excellent results. In October 1955, at the age of 22, he was employed as an archaeologist at the Laboratoire d'Anthropologie préhistorique , an institution of the Center national de la recherche scientifique , founded by Pierre-Roland Giot in 1944 . As early as 1959, he made his - often reissued - publication L'Âge du bronze and his contribution to the volume La Bretagne , which appeared in 1962 . Préhistoire et Protohistoire attracts attention. His academic career was initially interrupted by the Algerian War , in which he participated from 1959 to 1961 and was awarded the Croix de la Valeur militaire for his work. In 1965 he published his dissertation Les dépôts bretons et l'Âge du Bronze atlantique , supervised by Pierre-Roland Giot - for that time a milestone in terms of knowledge of the Bronze Age in Western Europe. The basis was a combined typological and spectrometric analysis of the bronze objects.

Act

His research focus remained Brittany , although he also researched in larger contexts and in particular devoted himself to the phenomenon of the Bronze Age and the introduction of metallurgy - including the Iron Age - in Europe. His interest was not limited to Europe. He researched large stone buildings in Korea and the Karen torques in Thailand . In 1986 he succeeded Pierre-Roland Giot as head of the Laboratoire d'Anthropologie préhistorique . From 1992 he was Director of Research at CNRS until he retired in 1998. He headed the Préhistoire et Archeology department at the Institut Culturel de Bretagne , which he founded in 1982 .

Jacques Briard has carried out numerous excavations and published his research results in over 420 scientific articles, including many comprehensive monographs. As the son of a family of teachers, it was important to him to make his knowledge available to a larger audience, which was manifested in guides to individual monuments or specific areas, but also in generally understandable representations of cultural and historical contexts. Ceramics, megaliths , graves, stone circles were dominant themes. As a lecturer in history and art history at the Universities of Rennes I , Rennes II and Nantes , he introduced the future generations of prehistorians to subject and methodology.
