Le Monnier is the remnant of a lunar crater that is partially filled with lava . It is located on the eastern edge of the Mare Serenitatis and the western part of the edge is missing, so that it now forms a large bay. To the north is the Chacornac crater.

The interior of the formation is relatively flat and smooth with no major crumbs on the surface. The outer edge is very irregular and pitted from previous impacts.

The landing site of Luna 21 is near the southern edge of Le Monnier. Lunochod 2 , a robotic car on board Luna 21, traveled 38 kilometers through the crater. It also examined the southern rim of the crater. By convention, the smaller craters are marked on moon maps by letters that are assigned to the distance from the crater.
