Le Renard (French for the fox, built in 1991) is a sailing ship of the ( gaff ) cutter type , which is based in Saint-Malo . It is a replica of a cutter of the same name from 1812 based on the original plans. The Association of Malon Corsairs (Association du Cotre Corsaire - Saint Malo) sails this ship in memory of Robert Surcouf , who came from Saint-Malo and increased the wealth he had acquired as a privateer captain as a shipowner and merchant.

A video was filmed about the ship to mark its tenth anniversary.

The model from 1812 was the eighth and last ship on which Robert Surcouf fought for prizes . It was under the command of Captain Emmanuel-Yves Leroux-Desrochettes . On September 9, 1812, the 70-ton cutter with its 10 carronades , 4 cannons and a 46-man crew came across the much stronger British Alphea . At 3 a.m., they hit their powder room. There were no survivors there after an explosion. The Le Renard returned to her home port with only 13 undamaged men, severely damaged. Leroux-Desrochettes died of his injury a few days later. Napoleon's fate also meant the end of the pirate era, and parts of Surcouf's life story appear in several films.
