Leandro Gomez
Leandro Gómez (born March 13, 1811 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † January 2, 1865 in Paysandú ) was a Uruguayan military and politician .
Gómez was a leading figure in the history of the Partido Blanco . He played a crucial role in the defense of Paysandús in the fight against the Revolution of Venancio Flores and was shot in 1865 together with other defenders of the city. His body was then transferred to Concepción del Uruguay and buried there. In 1884 his remains were transferred to the central cemetery, the Cementerio Central , of Montevideo, along with other heroes of Uruguayan history . The Uruguayan press reported on November 18, 2009 that Gómez's final resting place had been desecrated.
The Barrio Leandro Gómez in Montevideo is named after him.
