from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leather Goddesses of Phobos (German about: Leather Goddesses of Phobos ) is a text adventure of the company Infocom , the 1986 simultaneously for different hardware was released platforms, and was among the five best-selling titles in the history of the company. It was Infocom's first sex-themed game.

action

The action begins in Ohio in 1936 and is in the style of an American science fiction series of the time. The leather goddesses of the moon Phobos are about to launch an invasion of the earth and enslave humanity. The player was kidnapped on Phobos and his job is to prevent the invasion. A fellow prisoner reveals plans to the player for a machine that would stop the leather goddesses. In the course of the game the player searches for the widely scattered parts of this machine.

Game principle and technology

The level of personalities could be set in three levels between "tame", "suggestive" and "lascivious". The actual course of the game is not changed by this, but the narrative style changes significantly. The game also contained a boss button , so that a spreadsheet was simulated at the touch of a button . At the beginning of the game the player is forced to choose his gender. This also defines the sidekick : If the player is a man, he later meets the rather simple-minded Trent, otherwise one meets the slightly confused Tiffany. Since there are differences in the course of the game depending on the choice of gender, the game has a certain replay value - if you then refer to the non-existent sidekick, the game replies with "Obviously you played the game as both man and woman", followed by a Monty Python quote.

Production notes

The game was delivered without copy protection , but like many other Infocom titles it contained tasks that could not be solved without the instructions included in the packaging. Leather Goddesses contained the following inserts:

  • A Smell-o-Vision card with seven scratch-off fields that released different smells (pizza, chocolate) and were assigned to objects in the game.
  • The Adventures of Lane Mastodon , a 3D - comic with references to gameplay
  • A 3D glasses (for the comic)
  • A plan of the catacombs

In 1992 a less successful second part was published under the name Leather Goddesses of Phobos 2: Gas Pump Girls Meet the Pulsating Inconvenience from Planet X.

The ASM described Leather Goddesses of Phobos as the “most outrageous and at the same time humorous” game from Infocom and the gameplay as a “strange, cheeky and very, very funny journey”. The magazine highlighted the parser's “excellent vocabulary”. The British magazine Commodore User described the game as a “hilarious trip through space” and “an excellent adventure adventure for adults” and only criticized the high retail price of the game, which, however, offers the advantage that minors, for whom the game is not suitable, can presumably could not afford.
