Lechmere is the name of a tram stop the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in Cambridge in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is the northern terminus of branch " E " of the Green Line and has a small depot . The MBTA plans to expand to Somerville and Medford to provide a direct connection to the Fitchburg Line and Lowell Line commuter trains . The extension of the route also includes the relocation of today's Lechmere station to the opposite side of Massachusetts Route 28 , which is scheduled to open in 2017.

history

The Lechmere viaduct leading to the station was opened for use on June 1, 1912 . At that time there was no stop at the current station's position, but the tracks continued to lead to tram routes on Cambridge Street and Bridge Street . On the surface, there were often delays in operations due to the lack of freedom from intersections , which continued into the subterranean areas in the Tremont Street Subway , so that the Lechmere station finally opened on July 10, 1922 and was named after the neighboring department store of the same name . However, this was replaced some time ago by the CambridgeSide Galleria and therefore no longer exists today. A comprehensive renovation took place in 2010.

On February 11, 1983, at lunchtime and during rush hour, shuttle buses were used from the Government Center station to Lechmere because the Green Line E was no longer operational due to a snow storm . Contrary to what was planned, this service was maintained even after the tram was put back into operation and only finally stopped after 14 years on June 21, 1997. In the meantime, another shuttle bus was used between Lechmere and Kenmore from December 28, 1985 to July 25, 1986 .

Railway systems

Track, signal and security systems

The station has only one track, which is designed as a turning loop and is accessible via two side platforms . These are only connected to one another via a tunnel outside the station, so that a change of direction of travel is only possible with a new purchase of a ticket.

building

The stop is located at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Massachusetts Route 28 and is completely barrier-free - however, not all Green Line cars are equipped with low-floor technology, so you may have to wait for a suitable tram.

environment

At the station there is a connection to four bus lines of the MBTA as well as to the EZRide in the direction of Boston North Station . There are also 347 paid park and ride parking spaces.
