The Ledra Palace Hotel ( Greek Ληδρα Παλας Lidra Palas ) is a hotel building in Nicosia , Cyprus. Until the Turkish invasion in 1974 it was considered the most luxurious hotel on the island, since it uses the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus as a headquarters .

history

The architect Ginsberg built a total of four buildings in Cyprus, the Forest Park Hotel and the Hahollades House in Larnaka, the house No. 311 on October 28th Street and the Ledra Palace Hotel, from 1949 on what was then King Edward VII Street (later Markos Drakos Avenue). On the one hand, it takes up forms of Cypriot Gothic, on the other hand, Venetian forms can also be found in the facade.

Along with the Hilton Nicosia and the Forest Park Hotel in Larnaka, it was one of the three hotels that were the first to install a swimming pool in Cyprus in 1966. Guests at the hotel included Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor .

It was renovated and expanded from 1967 to 1968, but had to close in 1974 after the United Nations declared the hotel's property a buffer zone . The United Nations set up its headquarters in the building . The building now has a considerable backlog of renovations.

The building became known as a meeting place for the leaders of the Greek and Turkish ethnic groups.
