Lee Vining is a census-designated place in Mono County , California , United States . It is located at an altitude of 2067 m on the west bank of Mono Lake under the Sierra Nevada and had 250 inhabitants in 2000. It is named after Leroy Vining, who was one of the first whites to come to the region in the 1850s to look for mineral resources. When he was unsuccessful, he turned to forestry.

The place is accessed in a north-south direction by the US Highway US-395 and is located on the highway about 40 km south of Bridgeport and 45 km north of Mammoth Lakes . The place lives from tourism and benefits from its location on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada below the eastern entrance to the Yosemite National Park , which is reached from Lee Vining via the 3031 m high Tioga Pass . Other tourist destinations in the region are the ghost town of Bodie , the June Lake and streams with high value for fishing and in winter the ski resorts at June Mountain and Mammoth Mountain .
