Legend of Grimrock ( LoG for short ) is a computer game for the PC, developed by the Finnish , independent development studio Almost Human . The three-dimensional real-time - RPG based heavily on dungeon crawler role models from the 1980s and 1990s, especially Dungeon Master , Eye of the Beholder and Ultima Underworld . It was first published on April 11, 2012 as a pure digital distribution , a physical version (e.g. on DVD or in a sales box) is not sold. Legend of Grimrock is part of the Humble Indie Bundle 7 and has been available for Linux and Mac OS X since then. On May 7, 2015, an iOS version for iPad was also released in the Apple App Store.

Backstory

The introduction to the game, illustrated with scenes, tells of four prisoners, the protagonists later led by the player, who are thrown into a cave-like dungeon on a high mountain peak called Grimrock . If they find a way out of the dungeon, they are promised that their sentence will be waived.

Game mechanics

Legend of Grimrock is a first-person real-time action computer role-playing game . The player controls a group of players consisting of four characters, which he leads through a cave-like dungeon system rendered in 3D. The movement is field-based, but you can look around in 3D at will. This type of gameplay goes back to games from the 1990s, most notably Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder , which were heavily inspired by Legend of Grimrock .

The game play consists of a combination of puzzles to be solved , puzzles and combat situations. The characters of the group gain experience for defeating opponents in the dungeon, which allows the choice of an ability in a specialization direction when reaching a defined amount of experience (level increase). This specialization can be a combat ability (such as the more effective use of specific types of weapons such as sword, ax, bow, etc.), as well as a magical ability or even the more efficient use of armor. In addition, the protagonists can improve their situation with hidden equipment that can be obtained as a puzzle reward. I.e. many of the more complex puzzles in the game are designed as an optional bonus that a player does not need to solve. Often there are secret doors to be found.

As a homage to the classic roots, the player has the choice of an "old-school mode" at the start of the game. In this mode, the in-game map system is deactivated and the player has to rely on his or her ability to orientate himself or his ability to draw maps himself to navigate through the winding dungeon spanning many floors. However, a digital template for drawing cards is included with the game as a little help.

Development history

The game began as a hobby project of the programmer Petri Häkkinen under the working title DM2000 around 2001. In 2004 the game project was renamed Escape from Dragon Mountain and demos and concept art were published, but made slow progress.

In February 2011, the four LoG developers gave up their jobs at Remedy Entertainment and Futuremark in order to advance the project as a self-financed, commercial debut in their own indie studio, Almost Human . With the name change to Legend of Grimrock , the realignment was taken into account, no longer to develop a direct "Dungeon Master" clone , but a DM-inspired but independent dungeon crawler.

On April 11th, LoG was published digitally on the manufacturer's website as well as on digital distributors GOG.com and Steam . Both the manufacturer-distributed and the GOG.com variant are DRM- free.

On December 20, 2012, a Linux version like the promised MacOS port with the Humble Indie Bundle 7 became available as version 1.3.6.

Level editor and mods

On October 4th, 2012 the promised level editor was released as a free update with version 1.3.1.

Numerous mods have been published by independent players, some of which are more complex and extensive than the original game and most of them are available on the nexusmods site.

reception

In the week following its April 2012 release, the game topped Steam's Steam Top Sellers . Legend of Grimrock received an overall positive response from the trade press and gamers and achieved an average rating of 82% in 51 reviews on Metacritic . LoG was also commercially successful, LoG was sold 17,000 times via gog.com alone , the developers themselves spoke of income in the order of "multiple" the development costs within a week. In January 2013, Almost Human announced that they had sold LoG over 600,000 times.

Legend of Grimrock 2

On February 21, 2013, the game's developers announced that they were working on a sequel entitled Legend of Grimrock 2 . Instead of an originally planned add-on , it will be a stand-alone version with an improved engine with additional options.

The game was released on October 15, 2014 and received ratings comparable to its predecessor.

Retrieved on May 9, 2012: “ Legend Of Grimrock isn't a love letter to Dungeon Master, the 1987 blend of subterranean exploration, survival, switches and traps. It's a near-facsimile. But that's not a fact Almost Human is trying to hide; it's the selling point. Legend Of Grimrock replicates a classic faithfully enough to massage the nostalgia glands of anyone who played the original, and it's a test of the timelessness of an almost universally loved game. "
