Magnus Carlsen, initiator of the tournament

The chess24 Legends of Chess is an online rapid chess tournament that will take place from July 21st to August 5th, 2020. It is the fourth tournament of the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour . In addition to the world chess champion Magnus Carlsen , who organizes the tournament in cooperation with the chess platform Chess24.com , his predecessors Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik as well as seven other top players will take part. The four semi-finalists of the Chessable Masters qualified directly and the other six top players from previous generations were invited to the tournament.

background

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , sports operations around the world largely came to a standstill; in chess, the Yekaterinburg 2020 candidates' tournament was last interrupted on March 26th. However , chess continues to be played online via chess servers , also by numerous top players. After the successful implementation of the Magnus Carlsen Invitational , the event was expanded to include three more online tournaments and then ends in the Grand Final . The tournament series is endowed with a total of $ 1,000,000 in prize money.

transmission

The tournament will be broadcast free of charge on the internet at Chess24.com and commented on in 10 languages.

mode

Prize money of $ 150,000 is awarded for the tournament, of which the winner receives $ 45,000. The time to think about is 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move from the first move. Draw offers before move 40 are not permitted, this does not apply to any Armageddon games . The tournament is initially played in the preliminary round (July 21 to July 29) round robin with nine rounds in which everyone plays against everyone. Four rapid games are played in each round. If the score is 2: 2 after four games, an Armageddon game is played in which White has five minutes and Black has four minutes and a draw counts as a victory for Black. Whoever wins a match with only rapid games gets three points. If the match is decided in Armageddon, the winner gets two and the loser one point.

After the preliminary round, the best four players will qualify for the semi-finals (July 31 to August 2). The first of the preliminary round plays against the fourth and the second against the third. There will be three mini-matches per encounter. Each mini-match consists of four rapid games with the same time limit as in the preliminary round. In the event of a tie, two blitz games are played with a time limit of 5 minutes plus three seconds per move. If there is still a tie, an Armageddon game is played in which White has five minutes and Black four minutes. The winners of the semi-finals will play the overall winner in the same mode from August 3rd to August 5th.
