Legerwood Parish Church

The Legerwood Parish Church , also Legerwood Kirk , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland . It is located in the Scottish hamlet of Legerwood in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2012.

history

The earliest mention of a church on the site dates back to 1127. Most of today's Legerwood Parish Church is believed to be from this construction phase. This makes it one of the best preserved Romanesque church buildings in Scotland. The building has served as a parish church since the Reformation . In 1899 the building was redesigned by Henry Hardy and John Wight .

description

The Legerwood Parish Church stands in the middle of the surrounding cemetery about 700 m east of Legerwood. The building has a roughly T-shaped floor plan. The Romanesque nave is around 14.6 m long, 8.5 m wide and four axes wide. This is followed by a choir with a square inner surface with a side length of 5.3 m. It is exceptionally well preserved because it was separated after the Reformation and remained unused. Only in the course of the renovation in 1899 was this part of the building restored by W. van Vlack . A baroque memorial plaque to John Ker of Moristoun dates from 1691. The short north wing may not have been added until 1899, although fragments from around 1800 may have been integrated.
