The Lehof is a striking sandstone rock located 176.3 m high northeast of the town of Quedlinburg in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It has been under state protection as a natural monument since 1934.

geology

The Lehof consists of Cretaceous softened sandstone, which consists of a series of sediments from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous with the involute layers of the Upper Cretaceous (Emscher).

history

At the Lehof, sandstone has been quarried and quartz sand has been extracted as building material for centuries. In 1930, a hoard from the Bronze Age was discovered at the foot of the Lehof rock. A substantial part of the found pieces (including a sword and jewelry rings and chains) is exhibited today in the Quedlinburg Castle Museum.

The f in the name Lehof is a later addition, because there never was a farm there. In the 15th century, the Quedlinburg council accounts only mention the Leho (= burial mound). Although there was no yard on the Lehof, there was a control room for the Quedlinburg Landwehr . This control room fell victim to the quarry.

The Lehof rock has been under nature protection since 1934, so the quarry work on its east side had to be stopped. A short distance from the Lehof, large areas of quartz sand and gravel are still extracted as building materials on its west side and processed in a drying plant. Another stone grave was discovered in 2016 as part of the preparations for the expansion of the sand quarry.

Not far from the Lehof, federal road 6 passes north.

view

From the east side of the plateau on the Lehof there is a wide view of the northern Harz foreland and to the south of Quedlinburg and the Harz mountains .

fauna

The Lehof belongs u. a. to the habitats of the barn swallow , woodlark and mistletoe , which also breed here. Various bat species are also native to the Lehof , including brown long- eared bats , gray long-eared bats and fringed bats .

flora

The Pletau des Lehof is mainly overgrown with pine trees. The vegetation typical of sandstone rocks can be found around the rock.
